Saturday, October 26th 7-9pm Casey Wykes on The Upstairs Stage at GCM.
Casey Wykes was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and lived in that middle-of-the-road metropolis for approximately his first twenty years of life. He picked up a harmonica at the age of seven from an antique store. Although he always had a good ear for music and sang from early childhood for fun, Casey didn’t consider himself a musician or have any aspiration of becoming a songwriter until some friends of his back in Indianapolis had formed a band and encouraged him to play along with his harmonica. This gave him a shove into the realm of inspiration, and Casey began writing songs, creating melodies on the harmonica. At the age of twenty-three Casey moved to Washington and began singing his songs at open mics without instrumentation. One evening, after a short set, a fellow clapped Casey on the back saying, “man, you’ve got great songs. I can’t wait to hear you with a guitar or band or something.” Without his band he would have to settle on learning how to play the guitar, something he had once believed would never be possible. To this day he is no virtuoso on the guitar, but much like with life, he seems to be getting better, and at least he has learned enough to provide a solid backdrop for the vocals. In his words, “the song has more to say than the songwriter.
