These "Hawai'ian style" ukes are our very own, solid koa and mango wood instruments. Visit the workshop in the back of Gorge Community Music! A solid wood instrument is a big step up from the laminate bodies of entry-level ukes. Wood is stronger and stiffer, and so much more beautiful than laminate. You'll appreciate the difference in tone!
The beauty of mango with its bold grain patterns, amazing colors, and wild curl, creates musical instruments that are "one of a kind" because of the immense variability of these patterns. It produces instruments with big, warm voices, and is our first choice for building because we can price the instruments most affordably.
Koa is endemic to Hawai'i. It is precious, and this accounts for higher prices for koa instruments. It is a beautiful wood with color tones from blonde to deep chocolate, usually reddish brown with striping. Koa has a pronounced ability to reflect light which gives it a luminescence under finish. The koa we use is from our personal supply, highly figured and spectacular.
